When and why did you start your business?
While reporting for Public Radio International’s
Marketplace Morning Report in the aftermath of
9/11, I volunteered with the children of the victims
immediately following the disaster. During this
service work I learned a lot about consuming chaos
in the workplace and in stressful business situations
as I reported by day and volunteered by night.
My mission from that point on was to concentrate
on producing better media coverage exalting the
value of Human Capital in the workplace and demonstrating
the importance of worklife balance. I began JudyMartinSpeaks
soon after, speaking to business groups, social
entrepreneurs, and corporate America about worklife
integration using a four-step formula called Practical
Chaos: The Four Gates of Transformation.
Please provide a brief overview of your company.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?
My Hospice work with people who are facing life
challenging illness gives me the most joy as
it’s an opportunity to give back in a
very unusual way. Second to that is the work
I’ve done for the national radio program
- The World Vision Report - covering AIDS,
poverty, genocide, and human rights concerns.
Third is a tie between my Economic Fellowship
with the National Press Club Foundation and
my Emmy Award.
What advice could you offer women looking to get
into business for themselves?
Do what you love, with purpose, meaning, and courage;
listen to your gut intuition, and don’t be
concerned with what others think of you. We get
so bogged down bowing to the almighty dollar and
sidestepping what gives us joy. As accomplished
business women, there are standards we are often
forced to contend with. Image plays a big role
in this as society dictates how we must allegedly
look, act and sound a certain way. But I believe
we should set our own benchmarks as individuals
and have the courage to move forward in the face
of chaos and head upstream against the flow. You
can have purpose, passion and profit - your way.
They do not have to be mutually exclusive.
